General Surgery & Laparoscopic Surgery

General Surgery

General surgery, as the name denotes, encompasses a broad spectrum of operative procedures with regard to the diagnosis and treatment of injuries and diseases in any region of the body. Its scope of interest includes the skin, breasts, abdomen, peripheral vasculature, and head and neck, among other areas. General surgery is a surgical specialty that focuses on alimentary canal and abdominal contents including the esophagus, stomach and small intestine.

  • Appendectomy: The surgical removal of the appendix, often performed in cases of appendicitis, which is the inflammation of the appendix.

  • Cholecystectomy: Removal of the gallbladder, usually due to gallstones or other gallbladder diseases.

  • Hernia Repair: Hernias occur when an organ or tissue protrudes through a weak spot in the abdominal wall. Surgery is often required to repair these hernias.

  • Thyroidectomy: Removal of the thyroid gland, usually to treat thyroid cancer, goiters, or hyperthyroidism.

  • Pancreatic Surgery: Surgery on the pancreas is often necessary for treating pancreatic cancer, pancreatitis, or to remove pancreatic cysts.

Laparoscopic Surgery

Laparoscopic surgery: also known as minimally invasive surgery, is a surgical technique that involves making small incisions in the abdomen and using specialized instruments and a camera called a laparoscope to perform various procedures. Unlike traditional open surgery, which requires a large incision, laparoscopic surgery allows surgeons to access and visualize the internal organs with minimal disruption to the surrounding tissues. This approach offers numerous benefits, including reduced post-operative pain, shorter hospital stays, quicker recovery times, and smaller scars.

  • Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy: Removal of the gallbladder to treat gallstones or gallbladder disease.

  • Laparoscopic Appendectomy: Removal of the appendix, often due to acute appendicitis.

  • Laparoscopic Hernia Repair: Repair of hernias, such as inguinal or umbilical hernias, using minimally invasive techniques.

  • Laparoscopic Hysterectomy: Removal of the uterus, typically to treat conditions like fibroids or endometriosis.

  • Laparoscopic Colectomy: Removal of part or all of the colon, often performed for conditions like colorectal cancer or diverticulitis.

  • Laparoscopic Adrenalectomy: Removal of one or both adrenal glands, often required for adrenal tumors or hyperaldosteronism.

It is difficult to credit one individual with the pioneering of the laparoscopic approach. In 1901, Georg Kelling of Dresden, Germany, performed the first laparoscopic procedure in dogs, and, in 1910Hans Christian Jacobaeus of Sweden performed the first laparoscopic operation in humans.

The Health City Department of General and Laparoscopic Surgery is equipped with sophisticated instruments to carry complex yet simple Laparoscopic surgeries. The procedure of Laparoscopy uses an instrument called a laparoscope to look at the abdominal organs. General surgery is a traditional procedure in which a single incision, multiple inches long if not more, is made to access the abdomen. In contrast, laparoscopic surgery is a minimally invasive surgery that uses several incisions of one-quarter or less.
